Named after Armadale on the Isle of Skye and then promptly misspelt, Armidale on the New England Tablelands continued with its wryly humorous appellations by naming its main street Beardy St after the beards of the cityís founding fathers. Beardy St today includes a gracious mall lined with heritage buildings, boutiques and fabulous cafes and itís the heart of a vibrant weekend scene with music and markets.
Home to the Anaiwan and also Gumbaunggirr people, Armidale is halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and at 1000m altitude itís Australiaís highest city. Enjoying a climate known as highland subtropical, Armidale experiences four distinct seasons, each one with its own character and delights. Celebrating the regions long history of producing fine merino wool, the Australian Wool Fashion Awards are held in the city each year.
Despite its rough start in spelling, Armidale is now a world recognised education centre with the internationally respected University of New England and some of the nationís finest private schools including the Armidale Waldorf School, New England Girls Grammar School (NEGGS), The Armidale School (TAS), and the Presbyterian Ladies College.
Apart from the city centre, Armidale has a number of suburbs including, West Armidale, Madgwick, North Hill, Ben Venue, Newling, Acacia Park, St Patricks and Bona Vista, Duval, Commissioners Waters, East Armidale, South Hill and Soudan Heights. Historic Hillgrove, home to Australiaís first hydro electric system, is nearby to the east of Armidale while the charming village of Uralla is to the south with Guyra and its famous tomatoes to the north. Connecting all to Sydney is a daily train and regular flights from Armidale Airport.
